Joseph William Namath (/’neIm@th/, NAY-meth) was a American football player. He played for 13 seasons playing in both the American Football League and National Football League (NFL), mostly with the New York Jets. He was a football college player at Alabama. As an senior, he took home the national championship and was selected by the Jets as the number one overall selection during the 1965 AFL Draft. He was twice named MVP and twice led the league in passing yards. He also helped lead the Jets to an AFL championship and one Super Bowl. These are the Jets' only championships. Namath was an AFL-NFL fusion athlete who was a part of the NFL along with his Jets. He was the league's top player and scored touchdowns in 1972. Namath played in New York for seven seasons further, with his final season was spent with the Los Angeles Rams. In 1969, Namath established his name by making sure that his team, which was a bit of a underdog, Jets took home Super Bowl III. The Jets beat the NFL's Baltimore Colts in what was one of the greatest sports upsets of all time. This was the first Super Bowl win for an AFL team, disproving the idea that they were less successful than the NFL's. Namath received Super Bowl MVP honors in the game, while also becoming the first quarterback to win both a college national championship and a major professional championship.Nicknamed "Broadway Joe", Namath became a media icon who attracted mainstream popularity outside of sports. Namath remains one of the most adored and recognizable figures in the NFL despite his record of losing wins and stats being uninspiring. In 1985 Namath was admitted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
