Joe Namath

Joseph William Namath (/'neIm@th/ NAY-meth, born on May 31 1943) is an former American football quarterback who was a part of the American Football League (AFL) as well as the National Football League (NFL) for 13 seasons, primarily in the New York Jets. He played in the NCAA football tournament at Alabama where he was a finalist for the national championship in his senior year and was drafted by the Jets first overall in the 1965 AFL Draft. He was twice named MVP, twice leading the league in passing yards, and led the Jets to winning an AFL championship and one Super Bowl. These wins are the Jets' only championships. Namath was the NFL's leading passer and touchdowns leader in 1972, following the merger between the AFL-NFL. Namath played in New York for seven seasons further, with his final season playing for the Los Angeles Rams. In 1969 Namath established his name by ensuring that his underdog Jets were victorious in Super Bowl III. The Jets beat the NFL's Baltimore Colts in one the most memorable sports-related shocks. This was the first Super Bowl win for an AFL team, which disproved the notion that they were less successful than the NFL's. Namath received Super Bowl MVP honors in the game, while also becoming the first quarterback to win both a college national championship and a major professional championship.Nicknamed "Broadway Joe", Namath became a media icon who attracted mainstream popularity outside of sports. Even though his loss record are not impressive from a contemporary standpoint, Namath remains one of the most famous and well-known players. Namath was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
