Kevin Gates

Gates began his career at the local label Dead Game Records in 2007. In the late 2000s Gates' career was flourishing together with other fellow Baton Rouge residents Webbie and Boosie Badazz. In 2007 Gates' first mixtape Pick of Da Litter was released by the trio. Gates released a second mixtape, All or Nuthin' in 2008. It contained "a lot pain...a lot real stories." Both Gates as well as Boosie were imprisoned in separate cases in 2008 and put the end of Gates his music career. Gates spent 31 months in prison between 2008 and the year 2011. Gates claimed that he earned a master's in psychology from a prison program during this time. Gates was released earlier from prison due to good behavior. Following his time in jail, Gates began working on music quickly. In 2012, he gained some buzz with the mixtape"Make 'Em Believe. Gates also caught the eye of Lil Wayne's record label, Young Money Entertainment. In the following year, Gates was signed to the management wing of the label. Gates was not signed to Young Money's management wing. He did say that Birdman was the one who inspired him to start his own label for recording, Bread Winners' Association.
