For other uses, see Norma Jean (disambiguation) and Marilyn Monroe (disambiguation).Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 - August 4, 1962) was an American actress. Popular for her funny "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as a symbol of the sexual revolution of the time. She was a top-billed actress for the past decade, and her films grossed around $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2021) at the time of her death in 1962. [3] Long after her passing, Monroe remains a major iconic figure in pop culture. 4 The American Film Institute placed Monroe in the sixth spot on its 1999 list of greatest female screen icons of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Many film critics and media outlets have named Monroe one of the greatest actors to never have been nominated for an Academy Award. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent the majority of her childhood in orphanages and foster homes; she married at age sixteen. She was employed in an industrial facility in the midst of World War II when she met a photographer of the First Motion Picture Unit and started a successful pin-up modeling career, which eventually led to film roles that lasted only a few days with 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures. After a series of minor film roles after which she signed a new contract with Fox in late 1950. Within the next two years she was popular as an actress, with roles in numerous comedies, such as As Young as You Feel and Monkey Business, and in the dramas Clash by Night and Don't bother to Knock. She faced a scandal when it was revealed that she was photographed for naked photos before becoming a star but the incident did not damage her career, but instead brought more attention to her films.
