 Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, born July 3, 1962 was an American actor. One of the highest-paid actors, he's received various accolades including an Honorary Palme d'Or and three Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards. His films have grossed over four billion dollars in North America and over $11.1 billion globally, making him one of the top-grossing box-office actors of all time.Cruise began acting in the early 1980s and gained recognition for his leading parts in the comedy Risky Business (1983) and action film Top Gun (1986). His roles in the dramatic films The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (88) and Born on the Fourth of July (89) have earned his praise from critics. In the role of Ron Kovic in the latter the film, he received an Golden Globe Award and received an nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. As a leading Hollywood star in the 90s, he was featured in a number of films that were commercially successful which included the drama A Few Good Men (1992), the thriller The Firm (1993), the horror film Interview with the Vampire (1994) and the romantic comedy Jerry Maguire (1996). He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and was nominated for his second Academy Award. Cruise's performance as an inspirational speaker and actor in Magnolia (1999) brought him a second Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award.
