Liu was born in Harbin (China) on 19 April 1989. Liu is the son of Zhenning Liu and Zheng Liu. His parents were able to enter Beijing University, despite considerable opposition, to study engineering. His father Zhenning was admitted to America to pursue a PhD while his mother was employed in Beijing. Liu was raised in Harbin by his grandparents up to the age of five. He described his childhood as serene and joyful. Later, he emigrated to Canada with his parents. They could earn a scholarship with dish-washing jobs. Liu was born in Harbin, China to his father Zhenning, who went to America to complete a PhD. His mother worked in Beijing. Liu recalled being raised by his grandparents in Harbin, China, in circumstances he described as "idyllic and happy". Liu's parents "hothoused his maths skills at the age of five , and set 'homework' that included studying biographies of scientists and studying algebra". He attended University of Toronto Schools and then studied the business field at Ivey Business School. He graduated with honours in 2011 after nine months working as an accountant for Deloitte. [12] He began looking at other career options and decided to explore a career as a stuntman and actor. [13][1414 Liu began to distance himself from his parents following the loss of his accounting job and pursuing acting.
