Wilson was married to Elon Musk in January 2000. Their first child was born in 2002, and was diagnosed with sudden infant death syndrome at the age of 10 weeks. She gave birth to twins and triplets by the process of in vitro fertilization, which she underwent in 2004. She and Musk announced their separation on the 13th of September, 2008. Musk and Musk have joint custody of their children.Wilson later wrote an article for Marie Claire detailing ways in her opinion that the relationship was unhealthy, like Musk's denial of her career ambitions and his description of himself as the "alpha" in the relationship, and his pressure to make her the perfect wife. In 2010 she claimed to be a "model ex-wife" and claimed that she was in good terms with his ex-wife, Talulah Riley. She claimed that she retained the name of her husband Musk in order to provide for their kids. In 2022, one their twins changed her name to reflect her gender and chose Wilson as her name because she didn't want to have a connection with Musk.
