Hannigan was picked to play Willow Rosenberg, Buffy Summersher best friend in the 1997 television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show was a huge success and Hannigan was recognized and was later featured in several films aimed at teenaged audiences which included American Pie (1999), Boys and Girls (2000), American Pie 2 (2001) as well as American Wedding (2003). Hannigan also appeared in an appearance on the Buffy spin-off, Angel, reprising her role as Willow in a few episodes (including particularly "Orpheus" which aired during the fourth season of Angel and the seventh season of Buffy), but none after Buffy completed production (the final episode of Buffy premiered on May 20, 2003;[11] and the Angel episode "Orpheus," the last episode in which Hannigan appears, aired March 19th in 2003.).
